Meet your candidates for Student Body President and Vice President of Associated Student Community (ASC) for the 2019-2020 school year at George Fox University (GFU)! Alexa Hamaker, a political science and philosophy double major, is running with Kevin Tshilombo, a marketing and management double major. Kokanee Ellingson, a psychology major, is running with Meghen Elford, a sociology major.

On Jan. 26, Foster Parents’ Night Out (FPNO) had its monthly babysitting service for foster families in the area. Because babysitters for foster families must receive background checks and be trained in how to work with foster kids, George Fox University (GFU) partners with Every Child Oregon to train volunteers and run FPNO.

I won’t lie. I was a little disappointed to find out that Odd Moe’s Pizza was, in fact, not Mod Pizza, but the disappointment didn’t last long after I took the first bite of a cinnamon dough dunker. Odd Moe’s Pizza, a franchise that began in May of 1999, recently opened on Highway 99W across from the Newberg Chevrolet.

This past week was intended to be Random Acts of Kindness Week here at George Fox University (GFU). Put on by Student Activities, the purpose of the week was “to promote gestures of gratitude and kindness to peers, faculty and members of the community.”

When the U.S government partially shutdown on Dec. 21, no one knew for sure how long it would take President Trump and Congress to agree upon remaining budgets for the coming year.

I hate being late to class. The idea of being the last person to arrive fills me with dread. But to many students, tardiness does not seem like a big deal. Especially in my general education classes, it is not uncommon for students to show up late. Does tardiness bother professors as much as it does me?

On Nov 28, the George Fox University (GFU) Speech and Debate Club hosted an event called “Winning Arguments on Social Media.” Shannon Scott, associate professor of Communications, gave a presentation on social media arguments, explaining the conditions under which arguments can be constructive and how to respectfully stand up for your ideas in an online setting.

The IDEA center at George Fox University (GFU) is a familiar resource for many students. Located in the Stevens Center, the staff regularly assists students in their preparation to enter the professional world. Their student career coaching, however, has gone under the radar.

As the Christmas season approaches, the Ross building begins to transform. Home of the George Fox University (GFU) Music and Art departments, Ross is a hub for many of the school’s artistically-minded students. And so, as December rolls around, dozens of students in the Music department cover Ross and the adjoining Bauman Auditorium with Christmas décor.

On Nov. 14, Paige Lange, regional representative for HOPE International, gave a presentation at George Fox University (GFU) to promote sustainable charity. HOPE International is a Christian nonprofit organization focused on alleviating physical and spiritual poverty through Christ-centered microenterprise development.

George Fox University (GFU) students tore down the doors at 8:00 p.m. on November 2 to watch the annual Lip Sync Battle after waiting in line for an hour to fight for the best seats in Bauman Auditorium. Students put together their performances in a few short weeks for a chance to win $500. This year, four impressive acts killed it on stage: The Clock Boys, The Robin Quakers, The Recess and the Pieces and the GFU Women’s Soccer Team.

“Ring before spring” is a phrase heard often around the George Fox University (GFU) campus. It’s a testament to how members of the community view dating. Given that GFU is a Christian institution, this serious attitude towards dating isn’t exactly surprising.

If you spend anytime in the Canyon Commons at George Fox University (GFU), you have likely had the experience of being passed by a small giggling streak. Before you have a chance to comprehend what happened, they’re gone, weaving their way between the legs of your peers. When you see a parent following close behind, it becomes clear what the mass of giggles was. There are kids living here.

Guadalupe McCall began writing poetry as a demonstration for her eighth grade students in San Antonio, Texas, and is now an award-winning author. Her next big step is taking on the role of professor at George Fox University (GFU) and using this platform to encourage young people to use their voices for change.

The George Fox University (GFU) campus is filled with symbols.  From the new Alumni Bear to display cases filled with past memorabilia, meaningful items are not hard to find.  But one important symbol is relatively understated: the Peace Pole.

Roaming around George Fox University’s campus are two hardworking dogs, Shadow and Penny, who spend their days assisting sophomore Aspen Monkhouse and freshman Alyssa Minar respectively. You have probably seen the dark, shiny fur of Shadow or the curly brown hairs of Penny, but as tempting as it may be to pet them, these dogs are not to be distracted from their jobs.
