Halloween has always been a controversial holiday in the Christian community, and my family is no exception. It was always one of those “us” and “them” things; my friends were allowed to dress up and go trick-or-treating, but I was not.

On the George Fox University (GFU) website, georgefox.edu, there is a page titled “Religious Liberty Resources.” This page concerns the current problem of same-sex couples being denied service for their wedding ceremonies. The resources linked on this section of the GFU website are for those businesses who do not want to participate in same-sex relationships and marriages. These resources advise them on how to avoid legal trouble based on their opposition to these marriages.

On Oct. 6, Judge Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. In September, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused him of attempted rape while they were both high school students in the 1980s. The allegations were followed by Senate hearings and an FBI investigation, both of which seemed to have little effect on the confirmation vote.

In the past five years at George Fox University (GFU), the William Penn Honors Program (WPHP) has hosted 29 guest lecturers through its lecture series, most of them white men.

As high schoolers prepare for university, they have to choose what school to go to, what to major in, and possible career options, among a variety of other decisions. However, students at George Fox University (GFU) typically have one more decision to make: where to go to church.

There is an issue in today’s society, an unspoken red flag glaring through our phone screens. We scroll through social media and pretend we are not being manipulated in every which way—by our news, by our friends, by ourselves. 

One of the first experiences I had at George Fox University (GFU) was during Genesis, when students register for classes and receive information to prepare for the following fall. I remember nervously sitting in a classroom in Hoover, listening to a speaker describe what the next four years might entail.

According to The Huffington Post, only eight percent of people actually stick with the goal they set. Personally, I go back and forth with the concept. 

LGBTQ+ Christians have become an increasingly vocal group who are changing the church from the inside. Staying devoted to a group that generally does not accept the identity or sexuality of LGBTQ+ people is inevitably challenging, and usually results in a denial of the part of the person that does not meet whatever standards of Christianity are being imposed on them or in a loss or questioning of their faith. 

Passing through the busy intersection of 99W and North Villa, Thai The Knot’s “Grand Opening” sign stays happily plastered on the window. The small lot contains multiple cars, its fullness varying depending on the hour of the day. I enter the parking lot, peering into the windows, and see employees carrying giant plates piled high with cuisine. Customers sit at the tables and steam from the massive bowls coming out of the kitchen waft through the air. I anxiously open the door, awaiting my first Thai meal. 

On Nov. 8, elections were held around the country for local positions in office, tax measures, non-partisan ballot measures, and more. At George Fox University (GFU), however, there seems to be a lack of political participation and discussion.
