New THEO Classes for Freshmen Students
NEWBERG, ORE. –The religious component of incoming students’ general education classes has changed drastically this year with the addition of two new classes, THEO 101 and THEO 102. Both classes are titled “I Believe” and focus on a basic deconstruction of the Apostle’s Creed and biblical theology.
Fall Comedy: “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”
The first play of the year at George Fox University was the musical comedy “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.” Based on a 1907 novel by Roy Horniman, the Tony-winning show opened at GFU on Oct. 17 and ran for eight showings.
The Open Letter Movement
When Justine Hostetler opened and read the email, it left her with “a gut feeling that something about it was off — not just off, but very wrong.” In asking students to protect themselves using precautions that were largely being followed during both assaults, the email shifted the responsibility of attacks from the perpetrator to the survivor.
George Fox University Receives Grant to Treat Opioid Addiction
George Fox University (GFU) received $1.2 million dollars in federal grants to treat individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD). The grant will fund eight doctoral students with $25,000 annual stipends for three years while treating patients at two clinics: Chemawa Indian School Primary Care Clinic in Salem and the Providence Medical Group in Newberg. The program will begin this fall.
Hong Kong: Fighting For Freedom
In April of this year, Hong Kong’s government proposed a bill that would alter their current legislation. If passed, arrested citizens could be extradited back to the mainland for further prosecution outside of Hong Kong’s system. Much of the general public saw this as an infringement on their rights and took action.
Vaping-Related Illnesses Sweep Nation
As of Oct. 8, over 1,300 lung injury cases in 49 states have been reported related to e-cigarette use/vaping, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Twenty-six people have died across 21 states, including two in Oregon, in a wave of symptoms that is still being investigated.
Local Solidarity on Climate and Sustainability
From Sept. 20 to 27, people from Melbourne, Prague, Delhi, Portland and many other cities came together with a common goal. Worldwide, around 4 million people showed up to march, sign petitions, hold signs, and challenge their governments to do better regarding climate change.

GFU Hosts First Housing Preview Night
On March 5, George Fox University (GFU) held its first ever Housing Preview Night. Students toured various residence halls and on-campus apartments and houses in preparation for Housing Selection the following week. Prizes, such as succulents and tumblers, were also handed out to the lucky few of who filled out a bingo card.
