Tell Me Something Good

NEWBERG, Ore. – News cycles and the media can seem overwhelmingly negative, regardless of where one looks. This causes many to ask the question: what in the world has been going right? Fortunately, although bad news dominates headlines and is all-consuming at times, good news can be found at multiple levels.

At the international level, things are grim. War is happening between Israel, the United States and Iran, and Gulf families are evacuating while they can. In this type of situation, evacuees are typically forced to leave their pets behind in potential war zones, since most international flights don’t allow animals on board.

However, according to a report from Good News Network, the Greek government has organized an “animal airlift,” which aims to evacuate both Greek citizens and their pets from the Gulf. On Wednesday, a Greek plane landed in Athens with over one hundred passengers and their pets.

Back in the United States, it has been found that lead pollution has decreased by over a hundredfold since 1926. According to an article from Good News Network, once it began to be phased out in America during the 1970s, lead amounts in human hair samples have decreased drastically, showing that a reduction in the neurotoxin’s usage has done wonders for American families.

All other countries have followed suit, banning the use of lead as a fuel additive, with Algeria being the last to do so in 2021. Lead has been proven to cause developmental issues in children, so its removal from industrial, fuel, and commercial processes will be of great benefit to future generations.

Even on the George Fox University (GFU) campus, students are seeing victories. One is the university’s recent rendition of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Many students went to free showings of the play for entertainment.

“Everyone did so well and it was really fun to go and support my friends who had worked so hard in the show,” said sophomore Taylor Mitchell.

Sophomore Alex Covington is excited for growth and community through a new opportunity he’s gotten for the following school year. “I’m looking forward to Bridge housing,” said Covington. “It’s a part of Bridge Network, which is essentially a Christian group on campus focused on Jesus.”

One thing students have all been excited for is spring break, which could be overheard everywhere from cafeteria, hallway and classroom conversations in the weeks leading up to the vacation. Now back from Spring break, students can work to finish out the semester strong.

Even when the world looks bleak, good news can be found if it is looked for.
