On Sept. 10, George Fox University (GFU) hosted the Rise Conference in Canyon Commons. The event aimed to empower the women on campus as they build their careers and understand their strengths. As part of the event, GFU student Whitney Waddell performed a spoken word piece to share “inspiration more than [her] own self but inspired by a larger group of people.”

Sophomores Sydney Simmons and Michael Martin founded a weekly tradition called Mocktail Monday: a weekly event where students can get a free mocktail. But what started as a small get-together in Martin's dorm room has now attracted more than 80 regular guests.

Even if you don’t know his name, there's a good chance you've seen Mark Berglin riding through campus on his unicycle. While Berglin, a senior mechanical engineering major, is most well-known for his unicycle, he is also a notable figure in many clubs on campus. He is currently president of the Fencing Club and vice president of the Swing Dance Club. He has also been involved in Nerf Club, StuTea Time, and Arts & Crafts Club in the past.

George Fox University (GFU) is one of the latest institutions to follow along with teenagers and influencers in using TikTok to reach a wider audience. As many colleges have taken to TikTok to recruit prospective students and keep current students involved, the marketing team at GFU is working to do the same–but better.

The way Susana Montes talks about her sister makes it clear: family is important to her. Montes is graduating this semester, with a degree in social work and a minor in Hispanic cultural studies. It was a Bruin Flash, the first in many years, right in the middle of the Homecoming Football game. So, what is a Bruin Flash, who is Ryan Alvis, and why did he streak at a football game?

The mission of the Women of Color Collective (WOCC) club at George Fox University (GFU) is “to empower women of color through the creation of a Christ-centered community where they will be inspired, educated, and supported.” The WOCC is a space that welcomes everyone, but the main conversations of the club are centered around women of color.

Dr. Travis Pickell has the unique background among George Fox University (GFU) theology professors of having grown up Buddhist. Pickell said it is as odd as it seems that a “white dude” from California should have grown up within a primarily Eastern-Asian religion. Recently, he offered the backstory and insights into both Buddhism and how Christianity compares.

The Newberg Area Historical Society (NAHS) completed the first phase of the Newberg Historic Signage Program on Dec. 17, 2019, erecting six engraved signs throughout downtown Newberg. The NAHS is now in phase two and hopes to continue expanding historic awareness in Newberg with more signs.

Each bathroom at George Fox University (GFU) is distinct depending on the age of the building, the number of students that utilize it, and how those two factors combine to create its specific vibe. So, for the sake of the student body, I embarked on a journey to discover the best (and worst) bathroom on campus.

In February, 37 local businesses sponsored the Yamhill County Action Partnership’s (YCAP) food drive through a yearly tradition known as “The Melt Down.” Reporter Elijah Dapkus visited several Melt-Down-supporting businesses and assessed their sandwich offerings.

On Jan. 31, the Instagram account @freetoagoodhomegfu posted an image of a bag of hair labeled “Professor Hair (Clean)” on a pedestal in Brougher Hall, beneath a vinyl sticker that read: “Free to a Good Home.” This startling post was the genesis of a project resurrection by Assistant Professor of Art and Design and GFU alumnus Chandler Brutscher.

This year, Dr. Joel Mayward’s began his role as assistant professor of Christian ministries, theology and the arts. He had various connections with George Fox University (GFU), including having earned his master’s degree at GFU’s Portland Seminary. With these connections and Mayward’s educational background, he was a good fit for the position. But more importantly, Mayward felt a calling to the worlds of both ministry and academia. How did he end up at GFU? Mayward said, “God did it.”

Growing up in Spain, Dr. David Martínez traveled often to Germany, France, and other parts of Europe during his early life. Clearly the perfect candidate for the head of the Semester Abroad Program, he’s done about everything advisable and inadvisable one can do in travel. For those of us who are interested in Juniors Abroad, Study Abroad, or in any sort of wandering, there’s a lot to learn from the program director’s stories

On Feb. 19, George Fox University (GFU) hosted its annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Sadie Hawkins-themed dances are designated for women to ask men to the dance as opposed to the traditional man-asks-woman.

Many college students today struggle with finances. Often, amounts received through programs like the FAFSA can make or break whether or not you have student loans, how long you have student loans, etc. This can be an extremely stressful situation for most students.
