College isn’t just about going to classes and earning a degree. It is also about finding a community, making lasting friendships, and finding your place in life. This semester has presented a unique challenge to the social aspect of college life due to COVID-19-related restrictions on gatherings and community events. In an effort to develop and maintain a sense of community in dorms, Resident Assistants (RAs) have come up with new ways to get students involved.

The arts, particularly theatre and music, have had to make many adjustments in order to work around the mandates set in place due to COVID-19 and the resulting limitations on classrooms and other activities around campus.

Students and professors have mixed feelings concerning the hybrid class model, which became a necessity for many classes this semester due to the COVID-19-related restrictions placed on the traditional classroom structure.

At the start of spring term, one student’s goal to help his friends blossomed into a program to support George Fox University (GFU)’s cinematography major. I sat down with Scott Gaede, Sophomore Cinematography major and coordinator for Friday Films at Fox, to learn more about the development of his new program.

On March 6, Luc DeLorenzo and Coleman Weimer performed their debut EP, “White Noise,” at Chapters Books in Newberg. In doing so, they were able to expand themselves as rising artists and further develop their already well-established skillsets.

Transitioning from high school to college life is difficult enough for most people, but for Third-Culture Kids (TCK), it’s made even more difficult by the culture gap.

On March 7 at 7 p.m., the Hadlock Student Center at George Fox University (GFU) was no longer just a sports facility, but a space for observing and honoring Women’s History Month. Put on by Student Activities, a special showing of the documentary “RBG” was open to the student body.

On Friday evening, the Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a spoken word event at George Fox University (GFU). With a black curtain backdrop, warm mood lighting, hot drinks, and a full crowd, Lemmons 8 was nearly unrecognizable as the lecture hall it usually is.

On Saturday, students and faculty from the George Fox University (GFU) art and design department departed on a serve trip to Makeni, Sierra Leone. Those attending include senior McKenzie Young, senior Lillian Carver, and Jillian Sokso, professor of art and design. They are going to West Africa with one goal in mind: to teach women with disabilities the art of papermaking.

If you told roommates Alec Fernandez-Morales and Taryn Girard their freshman year that they would eventually have a podcast about “The Bachelor” together, they would’ve both laughed at you. However, that changed the moment they ordered microphones off of Amazon and started “Taryn and Friend.”

On Feb. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m., Newberg Christian Church (NCC) will be hosting Night to Shine, a prom designated for those with special needs. The Tim Tebow Foundation, which supports and sponsors the event, describes the night as a time for “churches to shine, the volunteers to shine, our honored guests to shine, and most importantly, God to shine!”

Have you gone to see “Jane Eyre” yet? Have you seen it but want to go see it again? The winter musical is showing from Feb. 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium. This Thursday’s performance is free to George Fox University (GFU) students. “Jane Eyre” is a musical adaptation by Paul Gordon and John Caird based on Charlotte Bronte’s novel of the same name.

Sticker Fest was held at George Fox University (GFU) on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Originally started last spring, Sticker Fest provides a chance for artists to profit from their work and support fellow designers by selling and purchasing stickers.

On Nov. 27, George Fox University (GFU) students Megan Cecil, Evangelina Montelongo, Regan Hill and Meghan Elford hosted a documentary showing of “Soufra” as part of their participation in a social change class. “Soufra” is an uplifting film about a group of women in a refugee camp in Lebanon who overcome countless obstacles and start a catering company. Following the documentary showing was a brief presentation about how GFU students can get involved in refugee crisis relief.

On Nov. 9, George Fox University (GFU) held a student concert in the Bruin Den at 8 p.m. GFU students had signed up to present their talent. Pizza, cookies and hot drinks were available for anyone who chose to attend.

On Oct. 27, George Fox University (GFU) hosted a showing of the film “Neither Wolf Nor Dog.” The film is based on a book of the same name, and the author, Kent Nerburn, attended the showing and held a Q & A afterwards.

George MacDonald’s classic short story “The Light Princess” was performed as a readers’ theatre piece by George Fox University (GFU) professor Gary Tandy’s Advanced British Literature class on Nov. 2 in Woodmar Auditorium.
