As we approach arguably the busiest time of year, students are in the midst of scholarship season. Now is the time for students to start looking at options to help relieve the burden of college tuition as much as possible. Whether it is applying for scholarships, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), or private loans, it is important to stay on top of the applications this time of year.

One option for George Fox University (GFU) students is seeking donor-funded scholarships offered by people outside of the University who want to help students fund their education. With over 170 individual scholarships provided to multiple applicants, hundreds of students have the opportunity to receive funds through these University-specific scholarships.

These scholarships are available to traditional undergraduate students with various interests, experiences, and goals. The criteria ranges for each individual scholarship which allows for many people from different majors to apply.

GFU Assistant Director of Financial Aid Brennan Rains encourages students to start the application process as soon as possible. The application can be accessed through the student portal, making it easily accessible to all GFU undergraduates. A new feature within the application allows students to make corrections or edits to submitted applications up to March 1, the application deadline.

When it comes to writing successful scholarship essays, making a good first impression is crucial. “Have an introductory statement that grabs the reader’s attention,” said Financial Aid Advisor Aaron Geist.

Not only is it important to stand out from the outset, it’s also important that students understand what their audience expects of them. “Pay attention to the question and answer it. Use the question to tell the story,” said Geist. A good essay takes time, so don’t procrastinate–start now.

In addition to donor-funded scholarships, Oregon residents can apply for the OSAC scholarships through March 1. When applying for scholarships, greater opportunities can often be found by looking within the university and locally, as students will be competing with a much smaller group of applicants.

While scholarships are a great option for students, applying for the FAFSA is another way to relieve some of the burden of college tuition. The FAFSA application is available now and it is encouraged that students complete it as soon as possible.

Many of the grants are on a “first come, first served” basis, so submitting the FAFSA application sooner than later can make students eligible for more financial aid. It is encouraged that students get the application done by February of 2023 to get the most out of their application.

As students approach winter break, consider using the time to help yourself out by completing FAFSA applications and applying for scholarships locally and nationally.

The financial aid department at GFU is happy to help students if they want to talk about financial aid options. You can contact the financial aid office to schedule an appointment at their website.
