On March 6, Luc DeLorenzo and Coleman Weimer performed their debut EP, “White Noise,” at Chapters Books in Newberg. In doing so, they were able to expand themselves as rising artists and further develop their already well-established skillsets.

But what is “White Noise”? I asked DeLorenzo for his thoughts on its inception. He said, “White Noise is an alternative-pop duo, comprised of Coleman Weimer and Luc DeLorenzo. We chose to start a musical group, frankly, because we both love music. We both find joy in creating songs for our friends and community.” He added, “Also, our band members include Jacks Whitehurst, Dan Rohwedder, and Jake Morgan.”

Chapters, a well-known cafe and bookstore, was an ideal choice for the performance.

“The purpose of having ‘White Noise’ perform at Chapters was to bring our community together for an evening, and to promote our debut EP: ‘White Noise.’ The concert was received very well, as we had many engaged and attentive audience members,” DeLorenzo said. “Our openers performed beautifully, and the atmosphere was fantastic. There isn't a thing we would have changed about the night.”

Part of running a musical group, however, is the potential balance struggle between creativity vs. school work.

“Honestly, there aren't very many struggles of balancing music and school,” DeLorenzo said. “Creating music acts as a relief from the stress that comes from being a college student. Furthermore, we are both Cinematic Arts students, meaning we engage in quite a bit of creative work. Because of this, the two worlds of cinema and music often collide, often with success.”

Being part of the Cinematic Arts program and having another outlet for creativity can help with creating content in addition to coursework, having projects work hand in hand rather than against each other. Both men have worked together within the Cinematic Arts program as well, creating content that will benefit each other as time goes on.

Another aspect of content creation such as this is the issue of support, or a lack thereof. For creators to continue producing it is imperative that they build an audience, or else there would be no one to receive their work. That’s why exposure and branding is key.

“Students can support ‘White Noise’ simply by listening to our music” DeLorenzo said. “From there, if you happen to find a song of ours that you enjoy, feel free to share it with a friend! Also, following us on Instagram is a great way to learn about information regarding new music and shows. With that, Instagram is an easy way to access our latest project on all streaming and music purchasing platforms.”

Through different distribution and streaming platforms, the duo have been able to reach a wide variety of audiences, thus further encouraging the idea of thriving independent artistry.
